Chatterbox is a speech practice app for children. It is built to keep as little information as possible. This page explains, in plain words, everything that happens with your child's data.

No accounts, no tracking

There is nothing to sign up for. We do not ask for names, email addresses, or ages. The site has no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party scripts.

Practice progress stays on this device

After each session the app saves the date, the word set, the score, and which words were missed. This is stored only in your browser's local storage on this device. It is never sent to us or to anyone else. The last 20 sessions are kept. You can delete them at any time with the Clear button on the home screen, or by clearing this site's data in your browser. Whether Grown-up mode is switched on is remembered in the same place.

The microphone and speech recognition

When you press Start, the app asks your browser to listen through the microphone and turn what it hears into text. Chatterbox never stores audio or sends it to our servers. However, the speech recognition itself is done by your browser, not by us, and most browsers send the audio to their own servers to do it:

  • Chrome and Edge send audio to Google.
  • Safari sends audio to Apple, or processes it on the device on newer versions.

How those companies handle that audio is covered by their own privacy policies, not ours. If you would rather no audio leave the device, decline the microphone permission. The app will then show two buttons so a grown-up can judge each word by ear instead. In Grown-up mode the app does not use the microphone at all.

Chatterbox also checks the R sound itself, and that part runs entirely on your device. On phones and tablets this on-device check is the only listener, so the browser's speech service is not used and no audio leaves the device (unless the check cannot start, in which case the app falls back to the speech service described above). While the app is listening it keeps the last few seconds of microphone audio in your browser's memory, only long enough to check each word, and then discards it. The first time you practise, your browser downloads a small speech model (about 90 MB) from Hugging Face, a model hosting service, and keeps it in the browser cache. Hugging Face sees your IP address for that download, as with any file download. The audio never goes to them or to us.

The Hear it button uses your browser's built-in text-to-speech to read the word aloud. Nothing is sent anywhere for this.

Hosting

The site is hosted by Render and delivered through Cloudflare. Like any website, those services receive your IP address and browser type in order to send you the page, and may keep short-lived technical logs under their own privacy policies. Chatterbox itself has no logging, does not record your IP address, and does not use it for anything.

Children

This app is meant to be used by children with a grown-up. Because we collect no personal information, there is nothing for us to share, sell, or delete on request.

Changes

If the app ever starts collecting anything new, for example if we add accounts to save progress across devices, this page will say so and the date at the top will change.
